What can you burn?

Is burning better than tipping?

Should you burn waste in your garden? You shouldn't burn anything that is likely to create nasty smoke (such as plastics or painted material) but you can burn those bits of paper with your name and address on to avoid people getting your information. You can burn garden waste.

You should however recycle rather than burn.

Always consider your neighbours. Have they got washing out? Are they sat in the garden?

Don't have a fire near a fence, building or hedge.

Don't burn rubber, plastic, tyres etc

Don't leave it unattended.

Pick the right day - not one when the smoke will linger.

Don't have a fire at the weekend or bank holidays - especially when the weather is nice.

Recycle or freecycle old junk rather than burn it.

Garden waste can be composted.

Most tips have a section for wood too!

Watch out for local by-laws which may restrict times and dates.
