Cut fuel bills and save money

electricity bill savingsElectricity and gas prices constantly seem to be going up

What can you do to pay less for your gas and electricity? It'd be great to save money on your gas bill, wouldn't it?

  • Use less
  • Pay less

Make sure you've not accidentally got the heating on when you don't want it on. Check thermostat levels too.

Use less

Frugal living doesn't mean sitting in the dark and cold. It means using energy efficient light bulbs, bought cheaply, having your house insulated - cavity walls, loft, draft proofing round doors, double glazing.

insulate your home to cut billsInsulate your home.
For all types of applications, from refurbishment or new build to renovations. Particularly suited to dry lining, cavity wall, pitched roofs, stud walls, under floorboards, attics and garages. More user friendly than conventional insulation.

Buy insulation online at screwfix and get it delivered to your door.

When you insulate it will take less energy to heat your home and the heat will stay longer.

You can also look at cavity wall insulation and double glazing as effective ways of reducing the heat escaping from your home.

If you use less electricity then it stands to reason your ill will be less. Learn to switch off lights in rooms you're not using. Don't leave computers on when no one is going to use them. Switch off the TV at the set not using the remote. Don't use the video very often? Then why leave it plugged in?

Don't fill the kettle more than you need to! Don't boil in more water than you need to.

If you're replacing kitchen appliances then buy the most energy efficient ones you can afford. (See our discount on energy efficient electrical items apge for ways of buying new products at a discount )

Don't have the heating on so high. Try it a degree less and see if you're still comfortable.

Get insulating curtains and tuck them down behind radiators when you close the curtains. Lots of people leave their curtains open at night - you should close them! The addition of blinds to a window will also cut down on heat loss (and help keep you cool in summer)

Put extra blankets on the bed, or for a very snug effect in winter - get an old duvet and put this under the sheet underneath you. This makes for an incredibly snug bed and the only problem being is you'll never want to get out of bed in the morning.

Pay less for your fuel

You can save a lot of money by switching to an energy provider who will charge you less for the fuel you use.

By switching provider you could save cash! You can also chose to buy energy from a green energy company - one who is using renewable energy as part of their fuel production.

You can usually get a discount for paying by direct debit. Having an online account can also give you a discount in some cases.

There are sites out there to help you make comparisons between all the energy companies. Before you start the process you should check out your existing fuel bills and see what amount you use currently.

It is well worth changing fuel companies to save money.

It is also quite easy to change companies. You need to know who you're with currently. The company you pick should write to you to confirm the change of company within a few days.

About renewable energy suppliers available

Good Energy - Click here to find out about Good Energy and how you can switch - Good Energy supplies only 100% renewable electricity to homes and businesses in England , Wales and Scotland . For every unit of electricity used by a Good Energy customer, Good Energy promises to buy a unit of electricity from a renewable power source.

Good Energy is owned by an independent PLC, the Monkton Group, who specialise in renewable energy only and the majority of its shareholders are Good Energy customers.

Good Energy is recommended by Friends of the Earth and the GOOD Shopping Guide. It achieves the highest rating with both these organisations and is the only supplier to supply only 100% renewable products. Good Energy recently became the first UK supplier to publish an independent audit confirming its renewable credentials.

Juice was developed in a unique partnership between npower and Greenpeace to give consumers a simple, practical way to help protect the environment. Click here to sign up for Juice electricity

By switching to Juice you can now buy green electricity at no extra cost.

As a juice customer you will be supporting the development of wind Farms at sea. Simply by switching to Juice, many customers have already helped the construction of the North Hoyle Offshore Wind Farm which will be the UK's first major wind farm at sea. By the end of 2003 it will be operating and will become the sole source of Juice electricity.

Ecotricity - Ecotricity is different from other power providers. It generates electricity from sustainable sources that don't cause climate change. Find out more about ecoticity

The company's commitment is backed by action: all profits are ploughed back into building wind turbines to meet electricity demands well into the future. This year Ecotricity is investing £10 million into this ambitious programme.

Independent, without external shareholders, Ecotricity only has its customers to answer to and views them as its greatest asset. More customers means more green electricity, which leads to a better environment for everyone.

Ecotricity offers a choice of tariffs:

New Energy

Ecotricity believes New Energy to be the greenest tariff available because it's directly linked to building of new sources of clean, sustainable electricity. And the money you spend on your New Energy bills is used for this.

By choosing New Energy you actively reduce the need to burn fossil fuels to generate power. During your first year with Ecotricity at least 10% of your electricity is matched from new sources, rising to 20% in your second year and 30% in the third.

New Energy shouldn't cost you any more as Ecotricity matches the standard prices of you local supplier.

New Energy is recommended by The Soil Association and WWF (World Wildlife Fund).

Old Energy

This is a 100% green tariff under which Ecotricity retires 11% of ROCs (Renewable Obligation Certificates) and 100% of LECs (Levy Exemption Certificates). However, there is no guarantee that the electricity supplied under this tariff comes from new renewable energy sources.

The latest Friends of the Earth Guide to Green Electricity Tariffs 2004 places Ecotricity's Old Energy tariff in one of its top recommended positions.

The following statement is taken directly from green energy’s own marketing literature:

“We created the Green Energy (UK) PLC because we want to offer people who are concerned about our shared environment the chance to do something

* Practical
* Positive, and
* Imaginative

about the greatest threat to the long term survival of our planet: global warming.

We want to grow a business that is ethical, responsible and constructive, but is also commercially sound, prudently managed and secure in the long term.

We want to make it possible for our customers to be more than just consumers; to be fully partners in our mission to create an environmentally responsible electricity supply industry.

We are hard-headed business people with many years of experience in commerce and industry, but we are dreamers too. We want you to help us change the world!”
