Frugal Living - Grow your own

Ever thought about growing your own fruit and veggies?

Whether you've got a patio or a huge garden or just a windwosill you can cost effectively grow some of your own food.
We recommned you start simple if you've never gardened before.

Beans, Peas and Herbs are all quite easy to grow from seed. Basica salad stuff like lettuce and rocket are also easy to grow and a few rows can keep you going all summer. Lettuce - especially fancy types are expensive but are cheap to buy in seed form and fairly easy to grow. Picking your own lettuce every day will be great fun too!

Once you've got the bug you'll find out that with a cold frame or poly-cloche you can grow stuff in a longer season. Some seeds are intended to be grown all year round.

Some seeds take only 25 days from planting to harvesting in warm soil - that's during the summer. So you can quickly and easily grow them.

Some plants require regular watering which might be tricky if you go away. Ask a neighbour to help. Your local library will have loads of gardening books, or ask an experienced neighbour.
